In 2016, our CTO Chris Scott led multiple efforts to implement many IT related improvements that enabled the successful launch of version 8 of our software.
As every summer, IG hosted an intern. Aspiring engineer Matt Scott, from Purdue University, spent his summer working on energy database improvements and quantifying expected long-term reductions in utility demand charges from solar plants. His conclusive findings are being integrated in our new customer sizing tool. As always, the full profiles of our team are on the team page of our website.

In June, President Obama hosted an Energy Storage day at the White House. On this occasion, the Office of the White House released an exhaustive, well thought-out and strategic report on the role storage will play in the necessary integration of more renewable energy onto the grid. The report makes a strong case that the quantity and value of frequency regulation procurement by grid operators will increase in the coming years.

IG landed a contract from Convergence Energy for the management of a 250 kW battery from Johnson Controls at the campus of North Central College in Naperville, IL. The battery, along with a 500 kW solar system, will be operational in January 2017. This project is inventively financed through NCC’s endowment, in a manner that could set a precedent for many other colleges across the country. Other projects are in advanced stages of negotiations and should add to IG’s network before the end of the year.

IG’s thought leadership in networked energy is increasingly sought after. In May, Jay was invited to speak at the Energy Storage Association conference in Charlotte. In August, Marc will be on a senior panel at Argonne National Laboratory. Then in September, Marc will attend our key trade show, Solar Power International. The same week, Jay will speak again at the Chicago Global Storage Innovation Forum. A busy season ahead!

Intelligent Generation is proud to announce that, in consortium with solar developers Convergence-Energy and Solar Power and Light, it has been awarded a project to operate and monetize a 880 kW lithium ion energy storage system for the municipal utility of St. Charles, Illinois.
This success is the result of a competitive process initiated when the Illinois Municipal Energy Agency (IMEA), who supplies to St. Charles all the electricity it uses, issued an RFP for utility scale solar power in April 2015. The 880 kW battery will be installed alongside a 550 kW solar plant.
This project demonstrates the superior value proposition of IG’s “smart” solar with storage solution compared to the economic returns of traditional pure solar projects. It also marks the first time in the United Sates that, to our knowledge, a software-as-a-service company is chosen to augment the profitability and integration of solar power through energy storage for a municipal utility. There are about 2,000 publicly owned utilities in the United States. IMEA alone federates 34 municipal utilities in Illinois and sees this project as a full size demonstration that could be replicated from St. Charles to its other members.

Nearly one year after its commissioning, S&C Electric reported to GreenTechMedia about the technical and economic performance of their Energy Storage System, managed for them by Intelligent Generation. For S&C, IG takes care of all PJM market transactions and dispatch by participating the storage asset in its aggregated virtual power plant. With an average performance score exceeding 90% and under current market conditions, S&C extrapolates that energy storage systems can pay back in less than three years.
